For the years we cover 1973 & newer GM only used a few different Rear ends. The Troublesome 12 Bolt truck rear end with an 8.75" Ring gear (These differ from the Car models). These have a small pinion shaft and WILL break under rough usage!
Next came the 10 Bolt rear end with an 8.5" Ring Gear. These are basically the same internally 2WD or 4WD...Even the 10 Bolt front ends are the same "Guts"! The BEST ones are the '89 to '91 Blazer & Suburban ones or '88 and newer Pick-up trucks. These have the BIGGER 30 Spline Axles and not the 28 Splines axles. These units come in 5 & 6 Lug axles and 8 Lug for Front Differentials.
There are 2 types of 14 bolt Rear Ends. These have been around for a long time! The only big change is in the width, when they went to the wider 1988 truck body style. The "Mini 14" or "Semi Floater" has 33 spline axles that are held in with large "C" Clips inside the differential. This is what the Semi Floater hub looks like.
The Largest 14 Bolt is the "Full Floater" with it's 10 1/2" Ring Gear and Bolt in 30 Spline axles. These ONLY come in 8 Lug models.
The DANA 60 is the "Big Boy" of Front differentials with it's 9 1/2" Ring Gear and King Pins...No Ball Joints here! See the D60 in the lower Right webbing?

Tooth Count is stamped on the Ring Gear. With this you can get your ratio...No guessing! 41 Divided by 11 = 3.727 (3.73's)
To figure out what Ratio you have you can look in the bottom of your glove box for the RPO codes (Regular Production Option). The older trucks are in code...you can just read them! To the Right are some of the RPO Codes for the most popular Ratio's.
If you can't read them for what ever reason... you'll have to do it the hard way! Drop the cover and get the tooth count off of the ring gear. Every Ring & Pinion are a mated set from the factory, so the tooth count is stamped into both of them (And the manufacture date).
